Rangeland Red stud holds the record for top priced buck

Jess Smith, Matt Wood and Rob Kuehn from the Rangeland Red Goat Stud at Goodooga sold the top priced goat, Mississippi, to Stewart Neyland from River Red Goat Company at Euston, at last week’s Nutrien Russell Cobar Invitational Red & Black Goat Sale held at the Dalton Park Horse Sports Complex.

The reigning Australian Record Holder for selling the highest price buck set in 2021, the Rangeland Red Goat Stud at Goodooga, has once again taken the title of selling the highest priced buck at last week’s Nutrien Russell Cobar Invitational Red & Black Goat Sale held in Cobar.

Rangeland Red earned the record for the highest priced buck at Nutrien’s annual goat sale in 2021, when ‘Marrakesh’ was sold for $21,000 to the Mosely family at Etiwanda Station.

Last year’s annual goat sale was due to have been held in November but due to flooding and inaccessibility to Cobar by both prospective buyers and vendors from both north and south, the sale was postponed to mid December, before being cancelled completely.

Last week’s Cobar Invitational Red & Black Goat Sale was advertised as “the biggest collection of red and black bucks ever sold in Australia in one place on one day,” and was offering 165 bucks and 55 does. (Some lots were later withdrawn.)

A total of 125 bucks were sold on the day to a top of $5,200 (with an average of $1,602) while 53 does were sold to a top of $4,000 (average of $1,400).

The top selling bucks, Lot 21 and Lot 51, sold for $5,200 each, and both came from Rangeland Red Goat Stud (Denman Station, Goodooga).

Stud Sire Lot 21 – 1025 ‘Mississippi’ an almost 2 year old buck weighing in at 93kg (current as of January) sold to the River Red Goat Company at Prill Park, Euston and Stud Sire Lot 51 – 1235 ‘Colorado’ at 87kg, also matched the top price of $5,200.

Rangeland Red’s Rob Kuehn said while prices were down on the incredible record amount they received for Marrakesh in 2021, they were however pleased with this year’s results given the current market.
