The number of nominations for this year’s Australia Day sporting awards may have been down on previous years (due mainly to COVID restrictions), however the quality of this year’s winners was still very high.
Simone Knight earned the Service to Sport award for her ongoing and exceptional work at Cobar Junior Rugby League Club.
Simone has been the club’s president for the past eight years and has just recently stepped down into the vice-president role.
She received a number of nominations that outlined her passion and enthusiasm for the club, and said she has spent countless hours developing the club and its culture.
The nominations praised Simone for her continual leadership, commitment and community mindedness which has helped the club to enormous growth and success over her time at the helm.
Sarah Morley collected the Kerrigundi award for her list of sporting achievements including representing Cobar Little Athletics at regional level, junior and senior Cobar Netball Association competitions, Western Women’s Rugby League representing the Castlereagh’s U14s side, Far West Academy of Sport U15s Rugby League program, Cobar Touch Football (highest senior girl try scorer), Cobar High School’s 14 years age champion for cross country and athletics, various CHS representative teams (netball, soccer and league tag) and was awarded the perpetual Cath Carroll Award for Interest and Participation in Several Sports.
Cobar Rugby League’s Under 18s side has together won 2020 Sports Person of the Year.
The Under 18s have won three premierships since 2017, and in 2020 went on to win back-to-back titles in the Castlereagh competition.
The nomination also gives a nod to the groundwork being done in Cobar Junior League as a feeder club to the senior comp.
