In the coming weeks more than 150,000 people will sign up to shave or colour their hair to support Australians with blood cancer and fund research, while in Cobar there’s a posse of pooches who are joining in the cause.
The Cobar Memorial Services Club is a regular supporter of the cause and secretary/manager Linda Carter said this year they thought they would do something different and give haircuts to dogs.
Mrs Carter said they have the full support of the Leukaemia Foundation to go ahead with the idea. She said the Leukaemia Foundation were quite keen to get on board and welcomed any novel ideas to raise money.
In the past a group in Canberra have shorn sheep.
It’s possible that Cobar Memorial Services Club is the first to shave dogs as part of the Shave for a Cure fundraiser.
Mrs Carter said the idea came about after club president Garry Middleton’s dog Claude picked up his master’s Shave for a Cure stubby holder and it quickly became his favourite toy.
That sparked the idea to shave dogs.
Claude, along with Lisa Clarke’s dogs Spud and Charlie, have been signed up to go under the clippers for the cause.
“Kind Hearts Pro Groomer Sara McCullock will groom and pamper the dogs the morning before the shave, then they will have a rest in preparation for the shave,” Mrs Carter said.
She said the club will be running raffles and $100 clubs over the next few weeks and there will be donation tins around to help raise money for the dogs to be shaved.
Mrs Carter said they have set a benchmark of $2,000 as their fundraising target.
She hopes the public will once again jump on board and support this worthy campaign.
