Peter Payne will continue to be the face of the Cobar Rugby Club after he was returned as president at the club’s annual general meeting on Sunday.
Apart from only one current player being present at Sunday’s meeting, Payne was however pleased there was a good turnout of 20 old boys, former players, parents of players and other rugby connections.
The meeting also received five apologies from people who could not attend the meeting but were interested in joining the general committee.
Kevin ‘Rusty’ Mitchell and Kel Ellicott were also returned as vice presidents and Samantha Ward as secretary.
Maree Grant was elected as assistant secretary.
Payne also took on the role of interim treasurer until an appropriate person can be found to fill the position.
Dale McLeod, Al Ewan, Allan Fazulla and James Ellicott have taken responsibility for grounds maintenance and 14 more were elected to the general committee.
In his president’s report to the meeting, Payne said the club had notified the Western Plains Zone of their intention not to field a team in the 2025 competition but would concentrate on re-building the team and return in season 2026.
“The Zone are very supportive,” Payne told the meeting.
The meeting discussion focused on the rebuilding the club for the 2026 season.
“While we’ve had our worries, we are still financially viable,” he said.
The Cobar club was supported at the Zone AGM by the Walgett and Nyngan clubs to introduce a women’s tackle competition (which Payne believes will help re-build the Cobar club). The motion was however defeated 4-3.
The Cobar club also put forward the idea to play some games on Sundays, of which the Zone was in agreeance to.
