It’s been two years since Pam Owers last had a haircut and, after she shaves her hair for the Cancer Council on May 8, it might just be another two years before she’ll need to visit a hairdresser again!
Pam means business and is planning to go short, very short, we are talking a No 3 or No 4 head shave!
After two of her Elders colleagues were affected by family members with cancer, Pam decided to shave her head, donate her hair to be made into a wig and fundraise for the Cancer Council.
“I just thought it was a good opportunity to do something to show my support for them,” Pam said. She’s never done anything like this before and has had long hair for the past 15 years.
“I had a bob in high school, that’s the shortest I’ve ever worn it. “I’m not too worried about it, it will grow back,” she said. Pam has a goal to raise $5,000 for the Cancer Council.
“I’ve opted for it to be spent on research for the prevention of Cancer,” Pam told The Cobar Weekly. “I just think it’s probably better to hit the nail on the head before it happens rather than trying to treat it.”
After the first day of fundraising last Thursday, Pam had reached the $1,000 mark and by yesterday she’d raised $1,411. She’s put out a challenge to businesses offering the business making the highest donation to have their name shaved onto the back of her head.
Pam’s also had an incredible offer of $10,000 for her NOT to shave her hair from local businessman, Chris Deighton from Copper City Tyre Service.
“I’m not sure what I do about that!” “I hope people get behind it, but mostly I’m doing this to show my support for those people who are directly affected,” Pam said.
“There’s so many fighting this silent battle.”
