The new Opens Mixed Touch competition kicked off on Thursday night at Ward Oval with some new-look teams and faces in the mix.
Fast Fades are one of the new kids on the block and they had a first round win, 14-7, up against Guns N Hoses.
Fast Fades’ triple scorers included Maddie Bruce, Sam Nardi and Tom Geikie with Joe Regan and Russel Brosi also crossing for a try each.
In reply, new player Noah Forbutt scored three times for Guns N Hoses with Beigh Hillier crossing for a double and Kiara McKay also added two points to their tally with her try. (Female tries are worth two points.)
Best & Fairest points went to Maddie Bruce, Tom Geikie and Kiara McKay.
Concrete Cowboys, who finished as runners-up last season, continued their good form to finish with a 12-7 win over The Blossoms.
Ryan Urquhart led the scoring for Concrete Cowboys with two tries and teams mates Ashley Davies, Bridgette Negfeldt, Niamh Urquhart, Toby Greenwood, Tyler Coughlan, Ben Griffiths and Neve Carter added a try each.
Jaxon Burke scored a double for The Blossoms with team mates Oisin McMullen, Sarah Nicholson and Sosie Barton touching down for a try each.
B&F points were earned by Ryan Urquhart, Oisin McMullen and Niamh Urquhart.
Another new team this season, the MTE Mako’s took down the giants from last season, the Red Hot Chilli Steppers.
MTE Mako’s easily accounted for last season’s premiers, 11-4.
Molly Carter added six points to MTE Mako’s tally with her three tries with Nikki Gilbert, David Watson, Reynold Mugugia and Tommy Bryan all crossing for a try each.
Red Hot Chilli Steppers’ points came from a try each to Brennah Aumua, Jack Brown and Sione Fakahua.
Tommy Bryan, Jed Noonan (MTE Mako’s) and Molly Carter shared the referee’s B&F points.
The closest game of the night was between Phat Athletes and Rusty Snails with Phat Athletes narrowly grabbing a 7-6 win.
Georgia Boland, Rhylee Patterson, Zoë Egan and Alistair Travis scored Phat Athletes’ points while Ethan McLeod (3) and Ashton Dietrich (3) were responsible for all of Rusty Snails’ points.
Ashton Dietrich, Rhylee Patterson and Mitch Shields (Phat Athletes) shared in the game’s B&F points.
