Seven pieces of Cobar’s mining history came home last week with the Great Cobar Heritage Centre staff excited to take delivery of the precious items.

Museum curator Kay Stingemore said some mining equipment used at the New Occidental Gold Mine in the 1940s had been on display at the WB Clarke Geoscience Centre in Londonderry, Sydney, for 30 years and was returned to Cobar last week.

“After an expansion, the centre could no longer house the equipment, so it was offered back to Cobar,” Mrs Stingemore explained.

“Currently in storage at the Great Cobar Heritage Centre, the equipment, including winder wheels, a wood trolley, ore cage and ore buckets, will soon go on display,” she said.

“It’s wonderful to have these items, which represent an important part of Cobar history, back where they belong.”
