The Under 15s Cobar girls rugby league tackle team travelled to Coonabarabran on Saturday to play the opening match for the NSWRL Outback Challenge between the Hastings Open and the NSWRL Outback Challenge men’s teams.
This was the Cobar girls first official competitive game since forming this season and they took on the Castlereagh Cougars side.
The Cougars finished with a 36-8 victory with Cobar’s tries recorded by Norma Mugugia and Rhylee Jeffrey.
The Castlereagh coach, support crew and representatives from NSW Rugby League, chose Cobar’s Halle Snudden as the Player of the Match.
Tillie Cain, Skyla Fairfull, Isabelle Gillette, Rhylee Jeffrey (C), Sharni Jones, Audrey Josephson, Sandi Moloney, Norma Mugugia, Ella Oborn and Halle Snudden make up the team. They were also joined by London Hyland home for the holidays and Ari O’Connell, a new resident to Bourke.
Following an injury to a Cobar player, one of the Cougars team members, Kalee Heenan, donned a Roosters jersey to even up the numbers.
(Kalee is the niece of the late Rick Scofield whose mum shared that he always wanted to see her kids have a run for the Roosters. As a sign of gratitude and respect from the Roosters community, a Roosters playing jersey was presented to Kalee and her family after the game.)
Both teams were presented with medals by NSWRL and the Cobar girls were encouraged to join the Cougars side for the representative season.—contributed
