A misjudgment by a B Double truck driver resulted in power lines being brought down in Bourke Street on Saturday morning.

Around 10.30am on Saturday police attended the intersection of Marshall Street and Bourke Street after receiving a report that a B Double truck had hit a power pole.

Cobar Police Sergeant Warwick Laing said they received a report that the power pole was damaged and electrical wires were hanging down onto the road.

“Bourke Street was closed at that intersection for a short time until Essential Energy crews attended and removed the wires and damaged pole,” Sergeant Laing said.

An Essential Energy spokesperson said power was switched off to 38 homes and businesses around 10.40am after the truck brought down the power pole.

“Crews set about replacing the power pole and associated network equipment as quickly as safety allowed, and restored power to all affected customers around 1.50pm,” the spokesperson said.

“As power was restored, a network fuse failed, and power went off again to those 38 customers around 2.05pm.

“The fuse was replaced, and power was restored for all customers around 3.25pm.”

The public is reminded to always stay at least eight metres away from fallen powerlines or damaged electricity equipment and anything in contact with them, and to report it immediately by calling Essential Energy or Triple-0 if the situation is life threatening.

The 54 year old male truck driver from Queensland was issued with an infringement notice for the offence of Negligent Driving.
