Health inspectors shut down illegal tobacco business

NSW Health issued a closure order on a local business last week after it was found to be selling illicit tobacco.

NSW Health inspectors, with the support of local police, conducted two inspections on a local main street business last week, with the second resulting in a closure order.

During a search of the premises on Wednesday February 18, NSW Health seized an amount of illegal tobacco products and vapes and police seized $4,400 in cash which is believed to have been the proceeds of crime.

The NSW Health inspectors and police returned to the same premises on Thursday February 19 to conduct a second inspection and seized further illegal tobacco products and vapes and police seized $3,600 in cash believed to have been the proceeds of crime.

In accordance with section 50B(1) of the  Public Health (Tobacco) Act of 2008, NSW Health issued a closure order on the business for three months for the sale of illicit tobacco.

NSW Health will also be issuing infringements to the owner of the business.

While the business is closed, it is an offence to enter the enclosed premises without reasonable excuse and it is also an offence to sell any product from the premises, unless an exemption has been granted.
