The Cobar Rugby League Club scored a hat trick of wins on Saturday in Round 5 of the Castlereagh Rugby League competition at Coonabarabran.
The Roosters First Graders returned to the winner’s circle after beating the Coonabarabran Unicorns 32-28, the Roosterettes trounced their League Tag counterparts 52-4 and the Juniors won 36-28 in their match over Binnaway.
The First Grade game was a hard-fought affair with only one try the difference in the final score.
Co-coach Thomas Plater said it was a tough match as they were short on a few players (with work and wedding commitments) and so had to call on some Under 18s players to step up and help them out.
“We showed great structure in patches but couldn’t string together consistent, good footy,” Plater said.
“The outside backs scored some great long range tries off the back of some good lead up work from the forwards.
“Too many dropped balls once again let the Unicorns back into the game.
“We should have closed the game out earlier and because we gave the ball away so much, when we had opportunities, we felt like we needed to rush things and score points straight away instead of building pressure and chipping away at them.”
League Tag captain/coach Brianna Watson said it was a good game for the team’s younger girls to build their confidence and gain experience.
“They all really stepped up to the plate on Saturday,” Watson said.
“Our line speed and defence stayed consistent throughout the match.
“We still had a few errors, which we will continue to build on at training,” she said.
The Cobar Roosters Under 18s win over Binnaway shot the team to the top perch of the Castlereagh Youth League competition.
They held out to account for Binnaway, 36-28, in their match, also played at Coonabarabran.
