The ‘Hare and the Tortoise’ story played out in the Singles Bowls Championships last week at the Golfie with tortoise Shane Carter’s patience eventually seeing him through to a win over hare Greg Clark.

Played under lights on Friday night, spectators were treated to a magnificent bowling display and, so enthralled were they, the Twilight event was delayed by an hour and a half!

Clark kicked off the game with a +4 end win straight away and, with a couple of three shot ends up his sleeve, it looked like Clark would be the easy victor.

However as we know in ‘The Hare and the Tortoise’ story, slowly but surely Carter managed to get himself back into the game and win multiple ends by one shot which saw him draw the score with Clark a couple of times.

Finally over the last three ends, successive wins by Carter saw him take the championship game by eight shots and progress to the next round.

Craig Grimmond and Don Roberts met on Sunday to contest their Championship Singles game and the match once again did not disappoint the spectators.

Grimmond was up by six shots by the fifth end but then it was all Roberts for the next five ends.

A four shot win followed by a three shot win for Grimmond was then countered with a three from Roberts, then three for Grimmond.

Roberts then held the mat for the next three ends but Grimmond’s golden shot on the last end won him the championship game! Grimmond also goes through to the next round.

In the Triples Championship match played on Sunday, Tony Polack, Randal Hall and Karen Daly came out on top up against veterans Peter ‘Skeet’ Goonrey, Jim Goonrey and Darryl ‘Dash’ Jermyn.

Team Skeet started well until Team Polack had a number of high scoring ends (including a five win) which is rare against such high calibre players.

After that it was all Polack n Co who won by +11 to go through to the next round.
