Golf’s best of the season

Local golfers Greg Clark and Narelle Kriz were recognised for their golfing prowess over the past season at the Cobar Bowling & Golf Club’s Sportsman’s Dinner on Saturday night. Both recorded hole-in-one’s in 2020 competition, with Clark
actually recording two hole-in-one’s last year. See the men’s and ladies’ golf reports, and Golfie bowls reports on Page 17 for full list of winners from the 2020 season.

Golfers enjoyed the annual Sportsmen’s Dinner at the Cobar Bowling and Golf Club on Saturday night, along with the bowlers and members of the Cobar Yabbies Senior Men’s Swimming Club.

It was a small but enthusiastic crowd in attendance.

Men’s Golf club captain Peter ‘China’ Brien gave a brief account of the 2020 season before handing out some of the season’s prizes.

A lot of the trophies had been already presented throughout the season.

The highlights of the presentation of some of the awards for the 2020 season with                           Jacob Ryan the A Grade Champion, Peter Brien (B Grade) and Jack Kershaw (C Grade).

The Foursome winners were: Jacob Ryan and Garry Wilkin; Mixed Foursome winners: Chrissy Gilligan and Jacob Ryan; Captain’s Trophy winner: Paul Kershaw; Bill Bartlett Matchplay: Jay Egan.

If there was a “Golfer of the Year Award”, it would nearly have to go to Greg Clark who had a wonderful season, taking all before him. Throughout the year Clark won competitions on at least 10 occasions including the Monthly Medal playoff competition.

He also made the final of the Bill Bartlett Matchplay competition where he was narrowly beaten by Egan.

Clark had 20 Nearest the Pin wins throughout the season, but because the Wednesday competition was not included in the final count, he had to settle with sharing the prize with Max Phillips, on 14. To top it all off Clark hit two hole-in-one’s, both on the 8th hole!

The 2021 Men’s Golf season commenced on Saturday with a stableford event contested by 13 players.

The winner on the day was Bian Smith with 37 points, followed by Greg Clark in second place. Alec Fraser won the Nearest the Pin prize on the 3rd hole and Smith won the 8th.

A well-attended working bee was held on Sunday with captain China acknowledging the help of the lady golfers on the day.

The season proper commences this Saturday, with a stableford and a 9am start. However, from Sunday all competition matches will be from 12pm. Sunday is the first Monthly Medal of the year, a stableford event. Out of Bounds
