Golf big guns make an appearance

A merry little band of six players went out on Wednesday and played in the Men’s Golf mid-week competition.

Max Phillips, whose golf hasn’t been anything to talk about lately, showed a clean pair of heels and pulled away to win by five strokes over Peter Lawrence. Phillips also had the only Nearest the Pin winning shot, on the 8th hole.

Saturday’s Monthly Medal competition had  18 players and, with the cricket season now over, some of the big guns made an appearance. Captain Alec Fraser had the best score of 37 points to be a clear winner over a fast-fading Zach Finn on 36. Fraser would have had an even better score only for his bogey (one over par) on the 10th hole. He hit a massive drive and yet could only score a five, while his playing companions, including two of the older golfers, walked away with comfortable pars!

Fraser however made up for that by nearly getting a hole-in-one on the 15th hole.

Third place went to Jay Egan, who got the nod on a countback from Chris Powell, when both finished with 35 points.

Scott Mayne was 5th with 34.

Nearest the Pin prizes were won by: Egan on the 3rd hole; Joe Blignaut 7th; Scott Mayne 8th; and Fraser 15th.

Sunday was a Four-Ball-Best-Ball game with only a small field of seven players, in other words only three pairs with one player, Wayne Josephson, a swinger.

The winning pair was Max Phillips and Greg Clark with 40 points.

The two Fraser boys, Alec and Mark, teamed up and came second.

Bill Fugar and Peter Lawrence came third, or last, depending on which way you look at it.

There was only one Nearest the Pin shot recorded and that was by Captain Alec, on his now favourite 15th hole.

A Four-ball aggregate will be played on Saturday and an Individual Stableford is set down for Sunday.—Out of Bounds
