The Hermidale Future Farmers at Hermidale Public School have recently harvested their wheat crop which is estimated to fetch around $50,000.

State Member for Barwon Roy Butler has been following the progress of this school project which began at the beginning of the year.

“With help from the local farming community, the students planted and grew an 85-hectare wheat crop, to gain experience of what is involved in sowing, growing and harvesting a crop and selling it,” Mr Butler said.

“Back in June I got to meet the students, saw their wheatfield and had a chat with them about what it is to be a Member of Parliament.

“I have been following the progress of their crop since it was first planted, and it is great to see it finally harvested,” Mr Butler said.

“For such a small school in a small community, they have demonstrated what can be done with a little outside the box thinking and community engagement.

“Well done to all involved.

“It’s been great to follow this educational initiative,” Mr Butler said.

The sale of the wheat, about 170 tonnes, is estimated to fetch around $50,000, and will be put toward educational field trips, and immersive cultural experiences.

The Hermidale community is now planning a Harvest Cut Out Party to celebrate the success of the project.
