Further improvements to the eastern entrance to town

Earthworks commenced on the vacant land next to the Miners Memorial Park at the
eastern entrance to Cobar last week in preparation for a bitumen seal of the area next week which will provide a designated parking area for visitors and free campers.

Cobar Shire Council is making further improvements to the eastern entrance to town with ground works currently being carried out in preparation for a bitumen seal next week.

Cobar Shire Council is preparing to bitumen the free camping/visitors parking area located next to the Miners Memorial Park.

The site, which is also directly opposite the Visitors Information Centre and the Great Cobar Museum, was cleared last week and a pad has been established in preparation for the bitumen surface.

Council’s general manager Peter Vlatko said additional gravel has been laid to improve the surface.

“When the area is sealed, there will be a designated road into the parking area, so visitors will know exactly where to park,” Mr Vlatko said.

The bitumen works will be carried out next week as part of community support from a company that will be undertaking highway works in the Cobar area at the same time.

Mr Vlatko confirmed there is no cost to Council for the sealing work.

He said there is scope for more improvements at the site in the future, including tree planting and landscaping.

“However, with the heat at this time of the year, it’s not the time to be planting trees,” Mr Vlatko said.

The upgraded area is expected to provide an identified parking area for visitors, tourists and free campers and aims to improve the overall appearance of the entrance to town.
