A group of 60 motor enthusiasts, with 22 cars (14 of which were historic) and six mo-torbikes took part in the very first Dust Bowl Fuel Burners (DBFB) ‘Memorial Drive’ on Sunday.
The social trip to Nymagee, which is now expected to become an annual event, was held in honour of the club’s past members, Peter Fairbank, Jack Haines and Peter Hausler.
The group’s first stop on Sunday was at Ken Dunne’s property ‘Gilbert Park’ south of Cobar where morning tea was supplied.
Members then drove on to Nymagee for a barbecue lunch at the Metropolitan Hotel sup-plied by the new publicans Blane ‘Blocka’ Smith and Celeste Whitbread and then returned to Cobar.
The club charged a small nomination fee with $350 raised which is to be donated to a local charity which will be determined at the club’s next meeting.
The car enthusiasts group was formed in 2011 and the club currently has close to 60 members.
Club spokesperson Marie Lawrence said club membership is open to anyone interested in cars and they welcome more like-minded peo-ple to join.
“You don’t need to own a historic car or even an old car to be able to join.
“It doesn’t have to be flash, just roadworthy, it could even be a work in progress,” Marie said.
Members meet twice every month, one of which is a social ‘Coffee n Cars’ get together.
“Since I’ve been involved with the club we have been to the Nyngan Ag Show, as well as done trips to Emmdale, Byrock, Albert, Bourke, Warren, Trangie, Griffith, Nymagee and Hermidale.”
The DBFB members love showing off their ‘pride and joys’ and regularly have their cars on display at numerous community events including Australia Day, Anzac Day, the Cobar Show and the Christmas Street Parade and the club also takes part in the Running on Empty and Grey Mardi Gras festivals.
Other plans for the club this year include participating at Nymagee’s gymkhana and flower shows and they will also be hosting the Griffith Bike Club for a visit in September.
