One of The Cobar Weekly’s founding members, Pauline Hunter, said a few words at our 40th birthday celebrations last week.
“If Bill Barwood, Peter Snelson and Rod Parker could have been with us tonight they would have been so proud that our BABY has turned 40,” Mrs Hunter said.
“Peter would be so proud of his son David who stepped into his shoes and has been on the committee for all these years.”
Mrs Hunter praised past committees, editors, and their invaluable staff, who took their turn in helping a country town’s newspaper thrive and grow towards its full potential.
She also acknowledged the support of local residents and businesses, the mines and Cobar Shire Council for trusting The Weekly with their advertising.
“Without your trust in us there would be no Cobar Weekly,” she said.
“Our present managing editor Sharon Harland has been with us for over half of The Weekly’s existence! Sharon, supported by the committee and her “Weekly Girls” (as I lovingly call them), have brought the paper along in leaps and bounds.
“The wheel turns round and round, week after week, putting the paper together, putting it to bed Tuesday evening so that it comes “hot” off the press Wednesday morning and is placed into the hands of our special group of volunteers for distribution.
“We know our paper is healthy and in good hands when awards start coming in and, last year our ‘Little paper’ blossomed into colour.
“I won’t be still on this earth when our paper turns 50, so I’ll make a wish for The Cobar Weekly.
“I wish that The Cobar Weekly will be a Never-Ending Story.”
