The Cobar Roosters First Grade side had their first taste of playing in the Castlereagh Rugby League competition on Saturday with the Cobar side taking part in a knockout at Gulgong.
The Roosters acquitted themselves well convincingly beating Binnaway 28-0 and put on another good show when they came up against Trangie. Cobar narrowly lost to the runners-up in the knock-out competition going down narrowly 8-10 to Trangie.
David Watson led from the front with a final tally of four tries (he scored in both games) with Sam Baker, Marty Turton and Thomas McBride also crossing for a try each for Cobar. Evan Rice added the extra points with the boot.
Cobar’s Chris Deighton and Tim Hillam have now been selected in the Christie and Hood Castlereagh League representative squad to play in the Western Rams representative games at Bathurst later this month.
Cobar’s Bianka Jacobson and Zoë Harland joined their Castlereagh Western Women’s Rugby League (WWRL) senior team for their final outing of the competition, also playing in Gulgong on Saturday.
It was a somewhat depleted senior team who took to the field against their Group 10 opposition but the Castlereagh Cougars put in a good effort to match Group 10 for most of the match. A try scoring spree by Group 10 that led to them scoring three tries in the space of 10 minutes blew out the final margin to 58-12 in Group 10’s favour.
All three of the Cobar Roosters Rugby League Club teams will head to Gulgong this Saturday to play the first round of the Castlereagh competition.
