An estimated crowd of over 500 caravans rolled into Glenhope station, 5.5kms east of Cobar, over the weekend for the inaugural Glenhope Shindig.
Hosts Marie and Mark Johnson were thrilled with the interest they had from visitors far and wide, many of which were on their way through to the Mundi Mundi Bash in Broken Hill.
“It was excellent, way above the interest we thought we might get,” Marie told The Cobar Weekly on Monday.
“Over the three nights (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) we served up 654 meals. I think Saturday night we did just over 300 meals in 40 minutes. We coped well with the big crowd.”
She said while the Shindig was to take place on Friday night and then Smoko in the Bush on Saturday, the visitors started coming in last Wednesday.
“Everyone was absolutely in party mode and we’ve got some absolutely amazing feedback, all very positive and everyone wants to come back again next year.”
Marie said many visitors were surprised when they arrived at Glenhope to find it well set up “in the middle of nowhere, out bush, where there’s trees and wood and plenty of parking”.
“One guy, when he came through the gate, said he actually thought he was at Mundi Mundi.
“The concert was great. They danced and kicked up a bit of dust, did a little bit of karaoke and had a ball.”
With plans already in place for a big celebration for the 150th anniversary of the establishment of Glenhope next year, Marie said this year’s Shindig was a bit of a “trial run”.
“We are hoping for a bit more entertainment next year, but a lot of people have actually said that they love it just the way it is.
“There’s already a lot of interest for next year,” she said.
