Paralympic Track and Field coach and former Cobar resident, Brett Robinson, was given the honour last week of taking part in the Commonwealth Games Queen’s Baton Relay when it passed through Dubbo.
Brett, who is still a regular visitor to his home town, was nominated for the honour and was selected to carry the baton on Day 36 of the relay when it passed through Dubbo last Tuesday.
“If I could sum it up in one word, it’s definitely pride,” Brett said of the baton carrying experience in a Prime Television News interview following the relay.
Brett said he was very proud of the para-athletes he’s been training and their achievements.
“They’re elite athletes, they train and dedicate their lives to their sport, the same as any able bodied athlete, so they deserve the accolades,” Brett said.
A talented former track and field athlete himself, Brett was also an Olympic Torch bearer in August 2000 when he and another local resident, Terry Jermyn, carried the torch in Bourke to welcome the Olympic Games to Sydney.
Brett was one of three former Cobar residents to take part in this year’s Queen’s Baton Relay with Inge Higgins carrying the baton in a mine dump truck in West Wyalong last week and Troy Cook took part in the relay when it visited Canberra on January 25.
