Event attracts a record field of shooters

Records were broken at the Cobar Clay Target Club’s 47th Annual Golden Clay Open Shoot over the weekend.

The club welcomed a record number of 117 shooters to contest the NSW State Night Points Score Championship on Friday night while a big field of 161 shooters nominated for the seven events contested on Saturday and Sunday, which included the NSW Junior Masters Championship.

Jason Griffin, a Sydney Clay Target Club member, won the coveted Overall Golden Clay Championship, to take home the 9ct gold miniature clay trophy sponsored by Aurelia Metals/Peak Gold Mines.

The program commenced on Friday night with the NSW State Night Points Score Championship 50 Target event.

Local shooters among the top placegetters included: Peter Hosie with a win in AA Grade with 188/189; Ross Morris shot 142/150 to win A Grade and James O’Neill was 2nd with 141/150; Darcy Manns had 138/150 to win B Grade with Luke Scales 2nd with 137/150.

The first event on Saturday was a 30 Target Point Score Championship, with Cobar club president Bryan Manns, only dropping one shot to finish second in AA Grade with 125/126.

In the 45 Target Medley event, Matt Schiller won AA Grade with 98/100 and James O’Neill was 1st in B Grade with 95/100.

In Saturday’s final event, the 30 Target Double Barrel Championship, Hank Pritchard scored 54/55 to take first place in AA Grade.

The first event on Sunday morning was a 30 Target Single Barrel Championship with Kevin Hatch the overall winner with a score of 52/52.

In the 30 Target Mafeesh Handicap, an event that carries a reward of the Mafeesh Cup, placings are awarded from 1st to 5th.

Additional enthusiasm is generated throughout the weekend with a Calcutta, being held in conjunction with this event. Seven competitors shot a possible (perfect) score, and so a shoot-off was held until the final placements were achieved. Dick Tulloh, with 45/45 finished as the winner with Scottie Brydon, Garry Burton, Brett Trindall, Will Crawford, Jason Griffin and Phill Chryssovelonis among the field of contenders.

The final event of the weekend was the 15 Pair Double Rise Championship with Matt Schiller the Overall winner with 30/30.

Matt Harland won A Grade with 46/50, Dick Tulloh won C Grade with 26/30 and Christie Wheeler was second with 25/30.

Will Crawford was the  NSW Junior Masters Champion with a score of 147/150, dropping only three targets over three events.
