The start of the school holidays caused a few upsets in the Senior Women’s Netball competition with only one game played at the Ward Oval courts for Round 6 of the competition on Saturday.
Two other games resulted in forfeits while a B Grade game was pre-played during the week. (See Page 24 for report on this match.)
The game that did go ahead on Saturday afternoon was an A Grade match between ENDivas and Wildcats with ENDivas eventually finishing as nine point winners.
Wildcats got off to a slow start but a few intercepts by their tall defender, Stacey Harrison, helped Wildcats to rein in the deficit and by the end of the first quarter they only trailed by a goal, 12-13.
Good teamwork in the goal circle and accurate shooting by ENDivas’ Janette Booth and Nikki Gilbert in the second quarter helped to give their side a seven goals advantage at half time.
By the end of the third quarter ENDivas had extended their lead to 19 points.
Gilbert was in great form pulling in numerous rebounds and she was also responsible for a number of intercepts to give her side extra possession.
Gilbert and Booth however were hindered in the final quarter with Wildcats’ defender, Sandie Mitchell finishing strongly to shut down the ENDivas shooters which helped her team to rein back the final deficit to just nine goals.
ENDivas finished as 50-41 winners.
The game’s Best and Fairest points were earned by Booth (3), Wildcats’ shooter Brittany Edwards (2) and ENDivas centre court player Summer Patterson.
Corinne McLeod was a standout in attack for her ENDivas team.
Wildcats’ Samantha Lloyd and ENDivas’ Cheryl Peatey were chosen by their opposing teams as for the Sportsmanship Awards.
