CWA invite public to Awareness event

Having a cuppa at Cobar CWA’s Awareness Week event on Saturday were Jodi Collier, Joan O’Brien, Colleen Boucher (CWA president) and Barbara Bartlett.

The Cobar branch of the Country Women’s Association (CWA) held an Awareness Week event on Saturday and invited the public to go along for a cuppa.

Cobar CWA president Colleen Boucher welcomed members and a number of guests to the afternoon tea and explained CWA’s Awareness Week had a focus on increasing public understanding the amount of food currently wasted by Australian households each year and of the benefits of seasonal eating, highlighting the health, economic, and environmental benefits to consumers and local producers.

CWA’s Awareness Week also aims to highlight ways to help household grocery budgets go further and help ease cost-of-living pressures with strategies like consuming foods that are in season.

“The older generation were definitely more mindful of food and resources,” Mrs Boucher said.

“Leftovers were repurposed. If there was an excess of fruit, something was done with it so that it was there for future use.

“Whether it be preserved or jammed or traded or shared. The good old barter system.

“That doesn’t seem to happen as much as it used to.”

Mrs Boucher said the branch has invited local producers Ann Crossing (from Nourish and Grow), Kaycee Cain and Sheena Geppert as guest presenters to the group’s meeting next month to talk about local food security.

Mrs Boucher said visitors are most welcome to attend the meeting or any other meeting to find out more about what goes on at CWA.
