Contestants set a cracking pace at CATS triathlon event

Josh Brown (3rd), Chris Freeman (1st) and Zach Finn (2nd) were the place getters of the CATS’ handicapped triathlon event on Sunday morning.

Cooler conditions on Sunday morning helped competitors to set a cracking pace for the Cobar Athletics & Triathlon Squad’s (CATS) monthly triathlon event.

Competitors said while the water temperature in the Cobar Memorial Swimming Pool was good for their swim leg, it was however a bit fresh getting out and riding into the breeze for the bike phase.

There was a good turn out of 15 competitors for the club’s February triathlon with four individuals taking on the Long Course (500m swim/ 20km ride/4km run) and eight individuals and one team tackled the Short Course (300m swim/10km ride/2km run).

The club also welcomed two first time competitors with 10 year old Axel Fairfull and new teacher to town Laura Andrew both putting in great efforts.

Zac Broughton set a new club Short Course record of 39min45sec beating the previous record of 40.32 set by Chris Freeman.

Tanya Gilbert was 30 seconds off the Female Short Course record which is currently held by Steph Baker.

The winner of the Handicapped event was Long Course competitor Chris Freeman who knocked seven minutes off his previous best time.

In second place was another big improver, Zach Finn, who bettered his previous Short Course time by six minutes.

With a change of bikes from last month to this event, Josh Brown easily shaved five minutes off his time to finish third.
