Cobar’s Under 15s league side has plenty of skill

The Cobar Under 15s girls rugby league tackle team had to overcome some tough conditions to play their Dubbo & District Junior Rugby League game on Saturday.

They played a game of 10 on 10 at Jubilee Oval (rather than Apex Oval where the other juniors games were played) on a very poor playing surface.

Alison Negfeldt from the Cobar team’s coaching staff said the players all had skin off and plenty of bruises, but it was a great game.

With their referee held up at another game at Apex Oval, the Wellington coach stepped in to be on the whistle to start the match.

The teams were made up of players from Cobar, Nyngan, Dubbo, Wellington and Narromine.

Cobar’s team captain Rhylee Jeffrey put in some strong runs and was also on point with her tackling showing her versatility by completing the duties of lock, half and hooker when needed. Rhylee worked seamlessly with Ella Oborn with Ella weaving and stepping to make breaks before successfully crossing.

Tilly Cain also touched down in the corner after hustling all game but was disallowed for being “a smidge” out of field.

Holly Watt was absolutely everywhere, setting the tempo of the game and being a pivotal last line of defence as Cobar’s fullback.

Norma Mugugia and Sharni Jones both pulled off a number of big break saving tackles on the wing and each had several line breaks.

Audrey Josephson and Sandi Maloney were strong in running the ball up the centre to gain metres with the opposition struggling to complete tackles against their strength.

Ashleigh Dalton was a standout in support tackling, and backing up her team mates on every set making sure every tackle was completed to held with a strong mark on the play of the ball.
