Cobar Yabbies reunite at Nationals in Nelson Bay

 

The Cobar Yabbies Senior Men’s Swimming Club competed at the AIF Swimming Association of Australia’s 90th Annual National Carnival at Nelson Bay on the weekend.

Approximately 350 swimmers from clubs across NSW and Queensland attended.

Two Cobar Yabbies, Greg Martin and Stuart Small made the final of the Skipper Nobbs 50m Freestyle Handicap Event.

The competition was tough and a time of 0.06 was required to make the final.

Small finished third in the final with a time of 1.03 seconds off his nominated time.

Yabbies Bill Fugar and Scott Toomey made the final of the Charlie Bell 100m Freestyle Handicap Event, sponsored by Cobar Bowling & Golf Club.

Fugar finished 2.60 seconds off his nominated time and Toomey was 3.78 seconds off his time but both missed out on podium places.

In the Scratch events, Small placed second in the Men’s Open 50m Breaststroke Championship and was third in the 50-54 years Men’s Freestyle Championship; Martin was the winner of the Service Champion 65-69 years 50m Freestyle Championship; Murray Harland finished third in the 60-64 years Men’s 50m Freestyle Championship; Grant McDonald was second in the 35-39 years Men’s Freestyle Championship (with a quick time of 31.50 seconds); and Lachlan Small placed third in the Men’s 18-24 years Freestyle Championship with a sensational time of 27.35 seconds.

In the relay events, Cobar finished second in the Wentworthville Leagues 6 x 50m Relay (Scratch race, sponsored by Cobar Bowling & Golf Club) with a time of 3 min 09.36 seconds.

The Cobar team was made up of Andy Thomas, Jason Toomey, Grant McDonald, Lachlan Small, Stuart Small and Owen Small.

The winning team from Maroochydore clocked 2 min 48.29 seconds!

Cobar finished 4th in the Ray Weeks 4 x 50m Handicap Relay Event (Combined age of 140 + years) with 2.5 seconds off their nominated time and placed 10th in the Ivo Wyatt 10 x 50m Memorial Relay…full report in this week’s edition out now!
