Hundreds of Cobar residents lined the streets to watch one of the biggest Anzac Day parades in recent history, this year led by bagpiper Ken Wallace. A huge crowd gathered in Drummond Park for the commemoration service which included special guest Chief Petty Officer Damien Goodman from the Royal Australian Navy. Cobar RSL Sub Branch chairman Ben Hewlett said Cobar has fostered a close relationship with the submarine community in memory of Cobar’s World War II hero Lieutenant Commander Robert Rankin, and has hosted guest speakers from the Royal Australian Navy for a number of years. During the service CPO Goodman shared an emotional letter from a young man at war sent to his mother in the belief he would not make it home alive. Mr Hewlett told the crowd he was pleased with the turnout of locals. “I don’t think we’ve ever seen so many wreaths and dedications laid before,” he said. Earlier a large crowd also attended the dawn service at Cobar War Memorial Hostel, where Mr Hewlett spoke of the importance of supporting the mental health of returned service men and women.
