The Cobar Netball Association’s Opens representative team competed at the 2018 Netball NSW State Championships at Garnet Adcock Park in Gosford over the weekend.
While it’s the third consecutive year the Cobar Club has been represented at the championships, this year marked the 50th year of running the event since it was first held in Moore Park in Sydney in 1969.
This year there were 96 teams from 71 associations competing.
The Cobar Opens competed in the Opens Division 2 category and played six games per day over the three full days of competition.
Day 1 of the competition was wet and miserable with the Cobar side taking its time to find its feet in the slippery conditions, but they finished the day with one good 20-12 win over Gunnedah.
On Day 2 the weather hadn’t improved much, however the Cobar team did and finished with two wins and a draw from their six games.
They beat Wollondilly in a thriller 25-24, and also Eurobadalla by a comfortable margin of 19-6 and had a 10-all draw with Armidale District.
While the Cobar girls failed to record any wins on the final day of competition, they did however give some of the competition’s top runners, Coffs Harbour, Dubbo and Young, a good run for their money and were just beaten 17-16 by Cessnock.
Manly Warringah won the Opens Championships title from Newcastle while Westlakes District claimed the Open Division 2 crown with Coffs Harbour finishing as runners-up.
