Eight Cobar High School Agriculture students were among 600 students from around NSW who took part in the 2026 NSW School Merino Wether Challenge in Dubbo last week.

The competition takes place over two packed days as part of the Rabobank Dubbo National Merino Sheep Show.

This year there were students from 69 schools taking part.

Cobar High School Ag Teacher, Rebecca Pinder said since receiving the six Merino wethers in March this year, the students have been working hard to care for and prepare the sheep for the challenge.

“This has included feeding, weighing, handling and monitoring their health and wellbeing, giving students valuable hands-on experience in sheep management,” Ms Pinder said.

In addition to the final event judging, students were also able take part in hands-on industry activities and hear from a careers panel that showcased the many opportunities available across the sheep, wool and agricultural industries.

“Across the two-day competition, students had the opportunity to put their agricultural knowledge into practice, attend workshops to learn more about the sheep and wool industry, meet students from other schools and see how their wethers compared with others from across NSW,” Ms Pinder said.

“All of our wethers made great progress over the last few months and one of the six was even classified as producing superfine wool which was a great result!”

Ms Pinder said Cobar High School is proud of the effort and commitment shown by the students throughout the program.
