Cobar CWA revives a tasty tradition in cookery competition

Local chef Haylee Prince (at centre) joined Cobar CWA member Anita Neate to judge the
entries at this year’s CWA Cobar and The Land Cookery Competition. The pair are

competition’s entries at the CWA Rooms on Sunday.

The Cobar branch of the Country Women’s
Association (CWA) is reviving a longheld
CWA tradition and bringing back
their cookery competition.
The Land Cookery Competition is sponsored
by The Land newspaper and is open to
any resident in NSW or the ACT—entrants
don’t have to be a CWA member to compete.
Each branch conducts its own contest with
the first and second prize winners eligible to
go on to Group then State level.
Cobar branch president Colleen Boucher
said she was keen to revive the competition
in Cobar and see Cobar’s best cooks go on to
compete further.
She said while the competition rules and
conditions of entry at branch level are a bit
“relaxed” the judges however are very particular
especially at State level.
The winners of this year’s Open Section
categories were: Lemon Slice—Kerry Wilson;
Chocolate Slice—Colleen Boucher; 12
Jelly Cakes—1st Colleen Boucher and 2nd
Kerry Wilson; Iced Chocolate Cake—1st
Rebecca Howard and 2nd Kerry Wilson; 12
Plain Scones—Kerry Wilson; 12 Savoury
Scones—Kerry Wilson; and 12 Sweet
Scones—Colleen Boucher.
In the Junior Section, the Plate of Iced Patty
Cakes winner was Ellie Traynor.
Mrs Boucher said they were pleased with
the number of entries for this year’s competition.
They were also pleased with the good turnout
of visitors on Sunday who supported the
event and purchased all of the items.
