Jeremy Theakston, Ethan Joppich and Jacob Theakston who made up ‘Jethan’ to win the Harvey Norman Team Award; the Promumletes team of Janette Bishop and Angela Francisco, who collected the JKM Dynamic Fitness and Stationery Essentials
encouragement awards; Isaac Theakston, who was the first finisher to collect the
Gumnut Gifted Male award; Mollie McAndrew won the Gumnut Gifted Female prize as the first female and Caleb Theakston (at front) who was the runner-up male.
There was a great turnout of 19 senior athletes and two juniors for the 2026 Australia Day Triathlon events on Monday at the Cobar Memorial Swimming Pool.
Organised by the Cobar Athletics & Triathlon Squad (CATS), the main event, a 300m swim, 10km ride and 2km run tested the athletes with the thermometer nudging almost 34 degrees when the race kicked off and it had ticked over 38 degrees by the time the last athlete crossed the line just under an hour later.
The seniors event offered prizes for the first placed individual male and female finishers along with the first finishing team.
Isaac Theakston took line honours to claim the Gumnuts Gifted Male prize after completing the course in a quick 32 minutes and 51 seconds.
Mollie McAndrew won the Gumnuts Gifted Female prize after she was the first female finisher with a time of 46min 10sec (and that included doing the 10km bike leg on a mountain bike).
The first team across the line and winner of the Harvey Norman Team award was ‘Jethan’ (Jeremy Theakston, Jacob Theakston and Ethan Joppich) with a time of 35.40.
Other notable performances were recorded by: Caleb Theakston, who was the second finisher with a personal best time of 35.15; Dakota Tatchell, who after a lengthy training period, returned to Triathlons on Monday and recorded an impressive run leg time of 10.18 which beat her previous run time of almost 12 minutes.
The Promumletes team of and Angela Francisco and first time triathlon competitor, Janette Bishop, were awarded the JKM Dynamic Fitness and Stationary Essentials prize packs for stepping up to compete after their recent pregnancies.
With a number of the junior competitors out of town, only one competitor, nine year old Michael Arnold lined up to compete in the mini event.
Michael completed the ride and run legs and Josh Gillette stepped in to help him out by doing the swim leg.
