The Brennan Centre Committee has welcomed a new secretary following the group’s annual general meeting last Wednesday.
Samantha Smith has taken on the secretary’s role while the remainder of the executive committee remains unchanged.
Barry Knight was returned as president, along with Stephen Dutton as vice president, Colleen Boucher as treasurer and Pauline Hunter as publicity officer.
Troy Knight was also re-elected to the general committee as well as resident members Phyllis Budd, Peter Driscoll and Emily Harvey.
The committee oversees the Cobar Brennan Centre, a community-owned and operated accommodation facility.
The facility is comprised of 18 self-contained units (for mostly senior residents looking to downsize from their family homes), a community hall and communal gardens.
Mr Knight said the committee works to a constitution and has guidelines in place as to how things operate.
The committee’s main role is vetting people who apply for a unit and also to oversee the upkeep and general maintenance of the facility.
Mr Knight said the centre does not receive any ongoing government funding but relies on the support of local organisations and donations.
Residents pay subsidised rent and, along with donations and some fundraising, Mr Knight said they get by.
He said there is a demand for more accommodation and they have a grand plan to build more units, however he said that will be reliant on grant funding.
The committee has jointly applied for grant funding with Cobar Shire Council and Mr Knight said the committee is still awaiting to hear if their application was successful.
In general business at the meeting, the committee discussed some maintenance issues, including lawn mowing and garden upkeep, and commenced making plans for their annual Christmas party.
