A Grade have claimed the 2025 Squalleyball crown with a 4-1 win over their archrivals, Reserves, in last Wednesday night’s grand final at the Youthie.
And they did it without their “king” Colby Lawrence, a veteran of the sport, who was declared medically unfit prior to the all important match.
A Grade looked like they meant business as soon as they entered the court.
They were focused on the job at hand and easily won the first set 21-14 with the Reserves appearing to be still warming up.
By the second set, Reserves had warmed up and they found their grand final fighting spirit to snatch a 22-20 win in the second game.
They were still fighting hard in the third game but A Grade were hungrier and they claimed the 22-20 win.
It seemed after two tough fights, the fight then went out of the Reserves and A Grade were able to close out the match with an easy 21-13 win in the 4th set (and take the match).
The 5th game was then a dead rubber which A Grade again easily won, 21-11.
The repechage match, between Naughts and Crosses and Cobar Shire Council (CSC), which decided 3rd and 4th places, was a real humdinger and it took until the final set before the victor was decided.
Naughts and Crosses started the night off with a first up win, 21-18, before CSC bounced back to easily win the second game 21-11.
The third game was a real tussle which Naughts and Crosses narrowly won 22-20 to give them a 2-1 advantage.
CSC found another gear in the all important 4th set to pull off a 21-15 victory and ensure the 5th set was going to be a thriller.
The momentum stayed with CSC and they closed out the match with a 21-18 win to avoid the wooden spoon award.
