It’s been a big week with four days of golf played in the men’s competition on a course that has been affected by the recent wet weather.
The mid-week competition on Wednesday was cold to start with, so cold, even Max Phillips didn’t play! (And he is on record as having played in a raging snow storm.)
However, there were seven players who braved the elements and it came down to the club’s most consistent golfers who won the day, Bill Fugar and John Carlaw.
Fugar had 36 points and Carlaw 34.
Greg Clark was a shot further back on 33.
Bian Smith has been playing too much bowls lately and it’s starting to show, as he only had 25 points.
Not one player won a Nearest the Pin prize.
The Monthly Medal was played on Saturday and the best score of the day was 31 points by Carlaw.
The average score for the 10 players was a pitiful 25.
Greg Clark came second with 29 points and an embarrassed captain, Alec Fraser, was very sheepish picking up third place with 28 points.
Carlaw won the only Nearest the Pin prize, on the 15th hole.
The Captain’s trophy on Sunday, a Stroke event, was expected to sort out the men from the boys.
The “guns” were expected to dominate but it was a player new to golf, Michael Howell, who won the day with a net score of 68.
Howell can only get better (especially if he buys a new set of clubs – he still has bamboo shafts on his sticks and his grips are held together with sticky-tape).
Second place went to John Carlaw with 71 holding off Jay Egan by one shot.
Alec Fraser was nearest to the pin on the 3rd hole; and the rest were not won.
While the best weather of the week was experienced on Monday, there were however only seven players contesting a Stableford.
It appears as if John Carlaw has replaced Bill Fugar for the ‘Mr Consistency’ title and once again he won the day with 34 points.
(However Fugar wasn’t there.)
Bian Smith turned up to play (late again) but still managed second place with 32 points.
Brian Russ sneaked into third place ahead of Max Phillips who apparently had a “frustrating” day.
Smith and Russ took out the 3rd and 15th Nearest the Pin prizes…see this week’s edition for full report.
