A new look Cobar High School (CHS) cricket side went up against their arch-nemesis, Bourke High School, last week at Ward Oval.
Bourke won the toss and sent Cobar into bat and by the 11th over Cobar were in cruise control at 2/52 with their captain Ben Howson (8) and Ben Griffiths (25) at the crease.
The momentum continued until the 19th over with the score 4/88 with Griffiths and Zac Broughton (2) batting.
A mini collapse was then triggered as Bourke’s persistence pulled them back into the game with Cobar quickly losing four wickets for five runs.
Josh Chaplin (2) and Riley Porter (6) carried the total past 100 runs for the first time in the school’s sporting history since 2013.
Ted Smith finished unbeaten at the end of the innings with Cobar all out for 112.
The Cobar team was buoyed with confidence heading to the field having a big total to defend.
Their opening bowlers Trent Robertson (with figures of 0/7 off 4 overs) and Ryan Urquhart (1/6 off 4 overs) successfully applied the handbrake to Bourke’s innings.
First change bowler Zac Broughton (4/10 off 3 overs) knocked over their No 4 to No 7 batsmen, while Jack Fazulla (with 2/8 off 3 overs) was responsible for Bourke’s three openers.
First time gamer Ted Smith, clearly in a hurry, took two wickets off two balls, to lead into the next game on a hat-trick.
The Bourke side was all out for just 31.
Coach Josh Brown commended the Cobar High School team for their sportsmanship and is thrilled to see them progress to the next round of the knock-out competition in Broken Hill.
