The raising of an Aboriginal flag for the first time at the Cobar Shire Council Chambers on Friday was a very important moment for local indigenous people.
Local indigenous elder, Elaine Ohlsen, spoke on behalf of the Local Aboriginal Lands Council board at Friday’s flag raising ceremony.
“It’s been a long time coming,” Mrs Ohlsen said of the occasion.
“I feel proud to be able to represent our whole community and honoured to have been able to speak today.
“This flag represents our people, our culture and our heritage.”
She said Aboriginal people just want to be acknowledged and recognised and flying the Aboriginal flag is one way of doing that.
