Golf skills were well and truly put to the test at the Cobar Bowling & Golf Club’s Greenkeepers Revenge golf challenge on the Cobar course on Saturday.
It was meant to be a fun day out but ended up having an important dual purpose, with the proceeds of the day going to help local boy Alastair Tatnell and his family as he undergoes specialist medical treatment in Sydney.
A total of $7,400 was raised through nomination fees, a raffle run by the lady golfers and $1,500 collected in donations, which was matched by a further $1,500 contribution from the Cobar Bowling & Golf Club.
With a unique set of rules and different challenges on every hole (including teeing off from the top of a mattress on the 10th hole), the event levelled the playing field for the good golfers, the not-so-good golfers and even the non-golfers who were simply looking for a fun day out.
Players faced a variety of unexpected twists throughout the course, keeping everyone guessing and ensuring plenty of laughs from the first tee to the final green.
And the field of 71 golfers all declared it was a fun day out.
The team of Mark Fraser, Craig Dillon and John Potter made good use of their honed golf skills and wiliness to finish as the day’s winners.
In second place were Matt Hunter, Jeff Hunter and Riley Hunter, with the team of Jeff Smith, Bian Smith and Fay Hardwick finishing third.
Bert Henderson, Jim Nicholls and Matt Knox finished the day with the title of “Worst Scoring Team”, however it did win them a great prize!
Prizes were also awarded for Best Team Golfer, Worst Team Tantrum Player, Best Windy and Biggest Team Hitter, with plenty of novelty awards adding to the light-hearted atmosphere.
Cobar Bowling & Golf Club secretary/manager Jason Howell, who was among the players on Saturday, said it was a fantastic event that had attracted a lot of positive feedback.
He said the club’s greenkeepers, Dax Branford and Greg Clark, put a lot of work into creating the challenges for the golfers, while Cobar Men’s Golf captain Alec Fraser and Jay Egan did a great job running the day and taking nominations.
Frank Singleton also kept players well fed by providing a delicious breakfast and lunch.
