The Cobar Roosters Rugby League Club celebrated three wins on Saturday when they hosted Gilgandra for Round 12 of the Christie and Hood Castlereagh League competition at Tom Knight Memorial Oval.
Cobar won First Grade, 60-0, (see Page 21 for game report), the Ladies League Tag match, 28-12 and, also claimed the points in the Under 18s Youth League game after Cobar narrowly won, 32-28.
The Roosterettes strengthened their finals credentials with their 16 point convincing
victory over the Gilgandra Pink Panthers in their Ladies League Tag game.
The home side controlled the contest over the 4th placed visitors from the outset and never looked seriously threatened.
Maddison Jeffery opened the scoring early for Cobar before Taylah Good produced one of the highlights of the match, taking a penalty tap from more than halfway and racing away to score beneath the posts. Brianna Watson added the extras to give Cobar a 10-0 lead.
Six minutes before halftime, Sarah Morley crossed under the posts to extend the advantage, with Watson’s straightforward conversion sending the Roosterettes to the break in command at 16-0.
Gilgandra got on the scoreboard soon after the restart when they were awarded a penalty try after Watson contested the ball all the way to the line.
The Roosterettes quickly regained control.
Bridgette Negfeldt broke clear to race away and score with Watson’s conversion stretching their lead to 22-6.
Watson then capped off another strong performance when she found space near halfway and sprinted away untouched to score. She converted her own try to push Cobar’s lead out to 28-6 with 15 minutes remaining.
The Pink Panthers capitalised on a loose ball late in the match to score a consolation try, which they converted, but it was too little too late as the Roosterettes claimed a well-deserved 28-12 victory.
Watson, Good, Negfeldt and Morley were among Cobar’s best in attack and defence; winger Rhylee Patterson had some great runs and Rori Urquhart and Emeliza Ah Van supported Cobar’s strong defensive effort.
The win ensured the Roosterettes retained their third place on the Castlereagh Ladies League Tag ladder behind competition leaders Dunedoo and Coolah, while the loss for Gilgandra sees them drop down to 5th spot.
The Youth League match was a thriller with the Cobar boys holding on to record a close
32-28 win. Will Oborn (2), Jaxon Burke (2), Ryan Mugugia and Clay McDonald scored tries with Brennan Auckett landing four goals.
