The Cobar Roosters Rugby League Club hosted the Castlereagh League Tag Knockout on Saturday, with the local side putting on a good showing with two impressive wins and a draw which put them into the semi finals.
The Roosterettes raced away to record a big 20-0 win over Warren in the opening match, followed by a 4-all draw with Coonamble and then posted a 12-0 win over Gilgandra which helped to secure them a semi final berth.
The Cobar side got off to a sensational start in their semi with Gulgong.
From the initial kick off, Taylah Good scooped up the ball and raced away to score a length of the field try to give Cobar an early
4-0 lead.
The Roosterettes were dominant all up and down the field and it was only just before the half time buzzer that Gulgong managed to get themselves into the game.
They levelled the scores with a try near the posts and the subsequent conversion gave them a 6-4 lead.
Following the halftime turn over, Cobar’s captain/coach Brianna Watson streaked away down the far side to score for Cobar and they took back the lead, 8-6.
Cobar continued to attack and a long kick in play by Roosterettes’ half Sosie Barton, which she followed up with a tag a metre out from their try line, had Gulgong very much on the back foot.
However the win slipped through Cobar’s hands with less than a minute on the clock, when a dropped ball was scooped up by a Gulgong player, who raced away to score a converted try and Gulgong finished with a
12-8 win.
Gulgong met the Dunedoo Swannettes in the final with the Swannettes finishing as
12-0 victors.
The Swannettes gave every indication that they will again be one of the sides to beat in the 2026 competition.
The Dunedoo side put in some impressive displays to take back-to-back knockout titles, scoring a mammoth 106 points and conceding only four throughout their four games over the day.
The on-field action will continue with the Castlereagh League knockouts for First Grade and Youth League sides being staged at Gulgong after the Easter break.
