gardens supervisor Paul Sullivan to discuss landscaping the area around the Iron Ring monument at the eastern approach to town.
Members of the Cobar Iron Ring committee met with Cobar Shire Council staff last week to discuss the final works that will complete the Iron Ring community project.
Iron Ring committee chair John Collins said landscaping of the area around the Iron Ring monument is the final step in completing the almost five year project.
John floated the idea of a monument to honour Cobar’s Iron Ringers, people born and bred in Cobar, at a public meeting in July 2021.
Since then he has spearheaded the project which received overwhelming support from local businesses including Aurelia Metals, KML Industries and As Per Plan Construction, along with Cobar Shire Council and many members of the wider community.
The monument was lifted into place in October 2024 and its surrounding paths and pavers were laid last October.
“All that’s left to do is the landscaping and irrigation,” John reported to last week’s meeting.
Following advice from Council’s Parks and Gardens supervisor Paul Sullivan, who will be overseeing the landscaping work, the committee has approved an easy care plan to lay a gravel surround and a couple of hardy trees around the monument with the landscaping to direct visitors to the site via the path (rather than walking across the engraved pavers).
