Best selling Australian author, Peter Watt, will be visiting the Cobar Library later this month for an author talk.

Peter Watt has been referred to the “home grown version of Wilbur Smith” with his big canvas Australian historical books considered to be a significant part of Australian literature.

He has written 24 novels, many of which depict Australia’s brutal past and the conflict over its frontier.

Before writing, Peter spent time as a soldier, articled clerk, prawn trawler deckhand, builder’s labourer, pipe layer, real estate salesman, private investigator, police sergeant, surveyor’s chainman and as an advisor to the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary.

He has volunteered with the Volunteer Rescue Association, Queensland Ambulance Service and the Rural Fire Service.

He made his debut as a published author in 1999 with Cry of the Curlew and announced last year that The Ghosts of August, released in 2024, book would be his last book.

Cobar librarian Jane Siermans said Peter was convinced by Erica Kearns from Warren Library at a library conference earlier this year to do a western area tour and luckily Cobar is one of the places on his list.

“He’s going from Bourke to here, to Nyngan, all in one day,” Jane said.

“He’ll be here for about an hour.

“If anyone has any questions to ask or if his readers would like to bring along one of his books, I’m sure he’ll sign them.”

Jane said another Australian author, Karly Lane is also coming to the library next month.
