Some good tussles in championship bowls games

There were some good tussles in the bowls championships games played over the weekend at the Golfie.

The Fraser brothers, Alec and Mark, won their Pairs semi final match by +2 over Narelle Kriz and Rory Dunlop.

It was a good match with the scores often breaking even until a six shot advantage in favour of team Kriz almost had them running to the winner’s post.

The Frasers however rallied and fired back with a five shot advantage on the second last end which got them over the line.

The Frasers then played Allan Knight and Greg Read on Monday with Team Knight winning by a margin of +2.

The stadium was packed to the rafters with everyone on the edge of their seats for the match.

And it was a brilliant game!

The Frasers kicked off with a favourable five shot advantage which took a few ends for Knight and Read to counter with but a three and then four shot win had them back in the game.

Barely a point separated the teams up until the 18th end. (There are only 21 ends in pairs championships).

The Fraser brothers then scored a very nice three shot win before Team Knight won the next by five shots.

With one end remaining, it was anyone’s game and Team Knight went on to finish with a +2 win.

They will have to wait to see who they meet  in the final as the other Pairs contenders, Craig Grimmond/Bian Smith and Kyle Roberts/Don Roberts have yet to set their semi final date.

In the Singles semi final game on Sunday  Craig ‘Duck’ Grimmond defeated Dean ‘Bogger’ McLeod by +10.

Barely a point separated the pair for the first nine ends before Duck started winning by two shots, and by the 21st end, he had a 10 shot lead.

Bogger tried valiantly to come back but Duck countered with more of the same to take himself through to the final.

Duck will have to wait for Alec Fraser and Kyle Roberts to play their semi final to find out who his final rival will be.

In their Fours Championship semi final on Sunday, Don Roberts, Tom Overend, Barry Bargwanna and Michael Sargent pretty much dominated all game over their opposition of John Goonrey, David ‘Ooze’ Knight, Allan Knight and Greg Read to win by +8.

Team Knight definitely had some good bowls in play but their opposition’s prowess on the greens was undeniable – especially when it came to summarily dispatching their opponents good looking bowls!…Full report in this week’s edition out now!
