The Cobar Roosters Reserve Grade side celebrated their second successive win of the Castlereagh Rugby League competition with an emphatic 32-12 win over the Gulgong visitors.
G’day sports fans, the Cobar Reynold’s Reggies players all woke up on Saturday to a beautiful day made just for footy, and while most people were still in bed, these fitness fanatic footballers were warming up ready for war.
Unfortunately Coach Bombay gave the younger lads a break this week which meant the team had to call on some old, fat ‘has-beens’ along with a couple of Cobar Camels players to help out for the day.
Reynold Mugugia wasted no time in telling the old fatties what to do, controlling the centre play like the Monopoly man.
Great solid ‘up the guts’ running from George Manu, Ben Griffiths and Chris Deighton ensured a tenderised Gulgong defence.
Cobar’s points came quickly with Ted Smith starting the roll-on effect of six tries to come.
Smith, having easy hands from dummy half, passed to the Roosters’ Haymish McLeod followed closely by another pass to Camels’ borrowed fullback Gordon James, who crossed to score.
Gulgong came back after the Roosters fumbled a few balls.
Some silly mistakes (led by ex-Rooster Matthew Manns) ensued before Tom McBride made Manns remember why he should have stayed in the Roosters jersey.
Going into the half time cigarette break, Cobar led 16-6 as McLeod started barking orders like a little Jack Russell, including reminding the players there was still another half of football to be played.
Gulgong came out a bit quicker in the second half and scored early after the re-start to upset the Roosters.
Mugugia, Chris Crotty and McLeod teamed up with some scary ball work which resulted in Crotty getting off the ‘nudie run list’ when he scored out wide.
Griffiths played in his old soccer boots and only missed one of his six conversion attempts from the sidelines.
Manu received the ball on half way, lost his footing and landed over the try line to get his first try ever.
Mugugia, sick of passing the ball, decided to take on the line and, with pure strength, skill and sex appeal, muscled his way over for the final try of the game.
Cobar claimed the 32-12 victory amid one sin-binning and lots of laughs again this week by all on the field.—Dido
