A group of 49 Cobar High School students from Years 9 and 10 and three teachers travelled to Sydney last week to attend the Stand Tall Conference for young people.
The Cobar students were among 5,000 students from across NSW who attended the conference, to hear messages of hope and inspiration from a range of motivational speakers.
Highlights included hearing cancer survivor Michael Crossland’s story, seeing NRL player Nicho Hynes and dancing to entertainer Timomatic.
The week also encompassed several career-based activities, including a visit to the navy base, HMAS Kuttabul, where students had a tour of HMAS Adelaide, the largest ship ever built for the Royal Australian Navy.
Students also visited The Hotel School in Sydney’s CBD and Charles Stuart University in Bathurst.
Students also engaged in team building and leadership activities with an Amazing Race Day, travelling via ferry from Chowder Bay to visit landmarks in the city’s CBD.
Across the week students visited Wild Lights at Taronga Zoo, got a little scared on an evening ghost tour in North Head, enjoyed the thrill of ice-skating and benefited from some retail therapy.
The cost of the bus was covered by supporters of Stand Tall, making a philanthropic donation to Cobar High School.
The careers opportunities for the students were made possible through funding from the NSW Department of Education’s School to Work Program.
