The Cobar Golfie team has been declared as the Pennants sectional winner after three wins and a draw in their games with Bourke and Nyngan.
Cobar hosted Bourke bowls teams in the second last round of the Pennants competition on Sunday and, after a comprehensive +43 win, next week’s match between Nyngan and Bourke is now a dead rubber (ie neither team will be able to amass enough points to beat Cobar).
Cobar’s outstanding win takes them through to the next round of the competition, which is the Zone 4 Finals, where they will compete for the No. 6 Pennant Flag.
If successful at that event, Cobar will then progress to the State finals.
While Bourke bowlers are renowned for being tough to beat, the calibre of Cobar’s bowlers proved to be too strong for them on Sunday.
The Cobar team of Don Roberts, Craig Grimmond, Michael Sargent and Dean McLeod started well to be up 10 shots by the 10th end.
Bourke’s tenacity however soon closed the gap to just one point in favour of Cobar.
A six shot win on the 18th end thanks to Bourke’s Ken Thorne’s amazing ability to drive with pin point accuracy (bowl with force into the ‘head’ dispersing the oppositions bowls & send the jack back to his teams bowls), kept them in the match.
Although the entire green applauded Thorne’s efforts, Cobar Team Roberts’ ‘shaken but not deterred’ attitude saw them go on to win the remaining ends. They finished with a margin of +4.
Gerard Livingston, Tony Brown, Shane Carter and Bian Smith, playing for Cobar, had the closest game of the competition.
Again Cobar’s hunger for the win saw Team Livo start very well, and they were up eight shots by the 5th end.
Once again, Bourke managed to reduce the momentum in Cobar’s favour and they came to within four shots by the 18th end.
Finally after much nail biting, Team Livo eventually won the match by +5!
Cobar’s team of Greg Read, Alan Knight, David Knight and Barry Bargwanna were quite frankly unstoppable.
From the ‘get go’ this combination of expert bowlers demonstrated (loud and clear) the premise that “there is no ‘I’ in team!
In a magnificent team effort, they ended with a +34 win.
Also on Sunday at the Golfie, a Pairs Championship game was played between the teams of Alec Fraser and Mark Fraser who were up against Karen Daly and Allan Gardoll.
Without a doubt after a big +13 win on Sunday, the Frasers are looking like true contenders for championship semi and final positions.
Daly and Gardoll were just thrilled to make it to double figures!
On the social front on Sunday, Gold Coast visitor Steve Mexted was welcomed back to the Cobar greens and he teamed up with John Daly and Greg Clark.
Their opponents, Doug Hudson, Tony Polack and Jason Howell, won by +14.
A four point win on one end early in their triples game helped Narelle Kriz, Greg Clark and Jean Roberts to an eventual win at Friday night’s Twilight Bowls.
They finished with a +5 victory over Don Roberts, Allan Gardoll and Yvonne Ferguson and were the overall winners of the night.
In the pairs game between Tony Polack and Karen Daly, who were up against John ‘Shark’ Daly and Steve Manns, the match was a close one with the scores even with one end to go!
Polack and Daly finished strongly to win by +2. Jean Roberts won the Spider event and the Jackpot didn’t go off.—The Second
