Australians across the nation paused on Remembrance Day last Thursday to acknowledge, honour and remember the courage and sacrifice of those who have served our country and those who have given their life in service to our nation on military and peacekeeping operations.
Remembrance Day 2021 marked the 103rd anniversary of the signing of the Armistice between Allied forces and Germany on 11 November 1918, which ended the First World War.
The Chief of the Australian Defence Force, General Angus Campbell, AO, DSC, attend-ed the national Remembrance Day ceremony at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.
“Each year on November 11, we pause to reflect on the legacy of the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation,” General Campbell said.
“In commemorating those who have come before us, we honour their contribution to our defence force and continue to draw on their strength and spirit in challenging times.
“Lest we forget.”
More than 2,500 Australian Defence Force personnel are currently deployed on opera-tions overseas and within Australia, actively protecting Australia as well as providing as-sistance to support the whole-of-government effort to address the impact of COVID-19.
They all were among those to pause to commemorate Remembrance Day (where operations and restrictions allowed).
RSL Sub Branch Cobar president Kain Neale led Cobar’s service and apologised for the “abridged service” they delivered which was shortened due to the wet weather.
“It’s important to do something,” Mr Neale said.
