Cobar hosts 140 swimmers from across the region

A field of 140 swimmers converged on the Cobar Memorial Swimming Pool on Saturday for the Cobar Swimming Club’s carnival.

Along with the locals, swimmers came from Broken Hill, Dubbo (Dubbo City Swimtech, Orana Aquatic Dubbo and Dubbo RSL clubs), Bourke, Nyngan, Trangie, Bathurst, Coonamble, Narromine, Lake Cargelligo, Wellington, Warren, Werris Creek and Mudgee to compete.

It’s the first swimming carnival for the Cobar club in three years and the new committee was pleased with the support they received from a number of local businesses which helped them to stage the event.

The Cobar club had a team of 29 swimmers, and for many this was their first carnival.

They all did well and many personal best times (PB’s) were recorded at the carnival.

Cobar swimmers who finished in the top places included: Max Ellison (6 years) 3rd 25m Butterfly; Axel Fairfull (11 yrs) 1st 50m Butterfly, 100m Butterfly and 200m Freestyle, 2nd 200m Breaststroke and 3rd 100m Backstroke; Joshua Gillette (6 yrs) 1st 25m Butterfly and 3rd 25m Freestyle; Luke Giurin (14yrs) 2nd 50m Backstroke, 3rd 50m Butterfly and Backstroke and qualified for the Invitation Only Skins event 14 years and Over (along with local Raymond Jones who swims with the Orana Swimming Club); Taj Goonrey (7yrs) 2nd 25m Butterfly and 3rd 25m Backstroke; Nicholas Hodges (13yrs) qualified for Invitational Skins and placed 4th; Piper Neale (13yrs) 2nd 200m Backstroke; Zaiden Saunders (12yrs) 1st Freestyle and Backstroke and qualified for Invitational Skins where he placed 3rd and collected $20 prize money; Jaxon Waugh (9yrs) 3rd Backstroke.

The carnival was interrupted three-quarters the way through the program by a massive storm and so the meet was called off.

Cobar Swimming Club swimmers were thrilled to be able to compete on their ‘home turf’ as the club hosted junior swimmers from all across the central west for full day’s carnival at Cobar Memorial Swimming Pool on Saturday.
