The Cobar Roosterettes recorded their second successive close loss, going down 8-6 to the Baradine Magpies in their Round 2 Castlereagh League Tag game on Saturday at Tom Knight Memorial Oval.
While there were some positives to come out of Saturday’s game, in particular the Roosterettes finding a new Hooker in Nichola Heagney after a brilliant second-half display, the team’s co-coaches Bianka Jacobson and Jay Egan were somewhat disappointed the Cobar side didn’t repeat their enthusiasm for the game from the previous week.
Both agreed it was the greater determination displayed by the Baradine team that in the end earned them the competition’s two points.
Saturday’s game was played in cold and
wet conditions and, despite having a glut of possession in the first half, the Cobar girls were unable to convert that into points on the board.
The Roosterettes did however defend well all game, as did Baradine, which attributed to the low score, and the match’s three tries all came from opportunities following penalties conceded by the teams defending their lines.
Baradine led 4-0 at the half time break after Madison Masman crossed to score close to the posts.
The scores were levelled early into the second half when Heagney dived over from the tap and Zoë Egan’s easy conversion from in front put Cobar ahead 6-4.
Some brilliant try saving efforts from Cobar’s fullback, Naomi Whitehurst, kept Baradine from scoring on four or more occasions but when Cobar conceded another penalty defending their line, Anna Arndell gave Baradine back the ascendancy when she scored, with four and a half minutes left in play.
The conversion missed the mark but Baradine held on to finish as narrow 8-6 winners.
Heagney was named Players’ Player and collected Cobar’s Best & Fairest three points with Whitehurst awarded two points and Brennah Aumua collected one point.
