Students visit the nation’s capital

During their excursion to Canberra last week, students from Cobar High School were welcomed to Parliament House by Federal Member for Parkes Mark Coulton. Mr Coulton said they were lucky enough to get a photo in front of the newly-hung portrait of former Prime Minister, Tony Abbott, which was only unveiled the day before. ▪ Photo contributed

A group of Year 9 and 10 students and their teachers from Cobar High School had the opportunity to visit Canberra last week.

As part of the excursion, students re-enacted a debate in Old Parliament House, met with our local Federal Member for Parkes, Mark Coulton, at Parliament House and also visited the Australian War Memorial, building upon their knowledge of Australians who served in World War 1.

The Australian Government generously contributed funding of $45 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program to help cover the cost of the excursion for local families.

Further careers funding from the NSW Department of Education’s School to Work Program was also received to help support students’ visit to the Australian National University (ANU).

The students also participated in other fun activities on the excursion including go-kart racing and ice-skating, both of which were popular.—contributed
